Seeing patients at the health clinic in Litoral

We spent the day in the small town a couple hours from Porto Alegre called Litoral.  We got to hang out with SAMU (EMS) and spent the better part of the day enrolling patients in a severe COPD trial in an effort to help get them expensive medications which they could not afford.

Our consult area in the posto de saude (health clinic) to evaluate patients for the COPD trial.  As many patients in smaller towns have little access to health care, we ended up treating patients for a variety of conditions including infected diabetic ulcers, management of diuretics for edema, hypertension and performing medicine reconciliations for all patients coming to the clinic.  One patient was being treated for her arthritic pain with NSAID's and outpatient labs showing a creatinine over 3 with no history of renal failure!  It was an interesting day peaking back into the world of primary care.
